A Vision for Urban Transformation - Woolloongabba
Woolloongabba Priority Development Area: A Vision for Urban Transformation
The Woolloongabba Priority Development Area (PDA) Development Scheme and Public Realm Guideline officially came into effect on Friday, 20 September 2024. This development scheme provides a strategic framework for planning, delivering, and managing land development across the PDA, which spans 106 hectares, covering areas of Woolloongabba, Kangaroo Point, East Brisbane, and South Brisbane.
A Greener Future for Woolloongabba
As development progresses, the PDA will undergo a transformative urban greening initiative, aimed at enhancing the area's liveability. Key outcomes include:
- Increased Parklands and Open Space: One of the most exciting aspects of this plan is that 50% of the Woolloongabba Cross River Rail site is designated to become ‘Central Park’—a significant addition that will offer more green space for residents and visitors to enjoy.
- A Network of High-Quality Public Spaces: The PDA will establish a connected network of revitalized green streets and public spaces. The new streetscape hierarchy will feature major subtropical boulevards and enhanced streetscapes, designed to:
- Create green corridors where trees and landscaping flourish.
- Prioritize safe and accessible active travel options.
- Improve connections between existing open spaces.
- Maximize shade through tree canopy cover, especially at intersections.
- Mitigate the urban heat island effect and promote urban habitats.
- Enhance flood resilience through improved permeability.
- Elevate comfort and amenity for all who live, work, and visit the area.
With these initiatives, the Woolloongabba PDA is set to become a model of urban sustainability, combining green infrastructure with world-class urban design, ensuring a vibrant and resilient future for the community.
